yes it can........

quite often cars have an electric overdrive... push the button & the revs drop 500 to a 1000 revs..
I should point out that overdrive was an option on many manual transmission cars of the past. In my own vehicle's case, there was an electric overdrive option available from the factory - it trades torque for engine speed, just as if it was a higher gear. The difference (in my car's case, at least) is that the overdrive is a separate unit from the transmission. It is activated using a dashboard control. As a separate component, it can be in effect over multiple gears (from 2 to 4, in my case).

I should indicate out which overdrive was an choice upon most primer delivery cars of the past. In my own vehicle’s case, there was an electric overdrive choice accessible from the bureau – it trades hanging ornament for engine speed, only as if it was the aloft gear. The disproportion (in my car’s case, during least) is which the overdrive is the apart section from the transmission. It is activated regulating the dashboard control. As the apart component, it can be in outcome over mixed gears (from 2 to 4, in my case).

The highest gear you manually shift into is the overdrive.

The top rigging we manually change in to is a overdrive.

The only difference is that on a stick shift you choose when to shift gears. You can still have the same gears.

Easy - exactly the same way automatic trans does. There are 5 and even 6 spd automatic and manual transmissions, and when in 4 th (direct or straight) gear, engine crankshaft turns with the same speed as the trans output shaft while in OD gear the engine rotates slower than the output shaft. The only difference is that in automatic trans it shifts automatically, and in manual - manually.

It is simply one more and sometimes two more gear ratios. For example the manual transmissions in the Corvette and Viper have two over drives that provide up to 50% over drive verses 30% on most automatics.

normally, a transmission, auto or manual is designed that the highest gear causes the output shaft to rotate at the same speed as the engine. If if the output shaft rotates FASTER than the input speed (@the clutch or torque converter), the transmission is designed with overdrive gearing , usually the hightest gear of an auto box and sometimes the top two gears of a manual transmission. In the past, an OVERDRIVE unit was a two speed attachment to the output shaft of the transmission that was engaged by an electic clutch after it was in the highest gear to decrease engine RPM for higher cruising speed and better gas milage. The o'drive on my '64 TR4 would drop engine RPM by about 1000RPM when engaged. In modern cars, the overdrive gearing is usually built into the gear box for simplicity of design.
